There are principally two possibilities to spend a year abroad
in childcare:

Most girls choose a normal au-pair stay and share the life
of their host family. They receive pocket money only, but no
salary.
In Europe an au-pair´s position is defined in the "European
Agreement on Au-Pairs" by the European Council. Although
the agreement has not been ratified by all EU-countries, everybody
concerned abides by its rules. It requires, for example, that
au-pairs have the opportunity to attend language lessons. Many
European countries grant certain facilities in obtaining the
visa and work permit to girls from non-EU countries under the
presumption that a cultural exchange be guaranteed and that
the language of the host country can be learnt.

Alternatively, qualified young women with an educational background
and training in kindergardens, teaching, childcare, hospitals
and similar have good chances as a nanny in numerous countries.
Nannies are professionals who only care for household chores
related to the children.
Nannies are well known in the English speaking world, especially
in Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia and the USA. In Britain,
for example, a nanny is a qualified nursery nurse responsible
for the day-to-day care of young children. Recognised qualifications
are awarded by the Council for Awards in Children's Care and
Education (CACHE) at over 200 local authority colleges and some
private institutions.
Immigration laws for girls from abroad are often strict, so
that they often choose a normal au-pair position for a year
abroad. Canada for instance, demands twelve years of general
schooling of its „caregivers“ - which is the official
term for „nannies“ - prior to the training in an educational
profession of at least six months. For obvious reasons there
are not many European girls fullfilling such requirements. Fortunately
girls who have had a paid au-pair position before, may apply
as well. Although "nannies" are called by this term
generally in Canada, the work permit is called "Live in
Caregiver Program". Nannies in Canada have always been
expected to do housework as well and are part of the family.
Legally, however, they are employees. Our agencies will advise
you.
Here the differences as to normal au-pairs: more responsability,
clearly defined working hours, social benefits as holidays etc.,
greater separation of work and private life and more independence
as nannies often do not live with the family, higher wages.
